cylinder head gaskets

Hey all. Sorry I haven't been around (well I have been lurking actually), but have had an uber busy 12 months. Quick recap: Finished the masters, discovered some potentially new anti-cancer drugs. Did some media interviews. Got engaged. Got accepted to start a PhD. O yeah, and found out it's likely that my head gaskets are gone and Team Moto quoted me $1200 for a fix. On a bike that is likely worth less than 4k. (I'm sensing a pattern, my commodore is worth the same and wants new engine mounts and caster rod bushes for not much less).

So the oil is leaking from just below where the headers enter the engine, and is doing about a 2 cm pool overnight. Anybody here (Mad dog if you are reading this ♥) think they can do better? I could probably afford $800. But I plan on getting something else sometime next year anyway, so wondering whether it's even worth it? This will be the first time since I started riding that I don't have a bike for more than a few days. The depression is already hanging over me like a cloud. I got home today and just turned the computer off. Didn't even care about losing the 2 hours worth of work I didn't save. Anybody keen for a weekend project (I have basic mechanical experience and can open beer bottles like a pro )?

What bike is it?

I've found that a Haynes manual is perfect for these types of jobs!

2000 zx6. Have a Haynes. But wouldn't contemplate doing this kinda thing. Well outside my pay grade methinks. Am assuming the job is somewhat more involved then removing a wheel or changing a chain.

I hope I'm not to late. That leak is very common and is probably not the head gasket. It is usually the valve/cam cover leaking. I may be wrong but I would double check before removing the head as a valve/cam cover gasket is a piece of cake to change. The leak is very hard to spot and dribbles down making it appear as if the head gasket is leaking. Cheers!
