bike running bad this morning

Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:50 pm

Hi All
I went out to ride to work this morning and my 99 zx9 took a bit to start and then run a little rough while I put my gloves on.
Once I got out onto the road it was missing quite a bit. sort of a rapid missing sound and rough running.
I took it around the block and pulled the choke on and off but it was still missing.
So I took it home and drove the car.

Does anyone have any idea where I should start to look?
cheers

Find out which cylinders are missing (Cooler exhaust header pipes) then check spark plugs, then check carb's for blockages on the carb which feeds that cylinder. It could also be just a dodgy bit of fuel, so try a cap full of metholated spirits to absorb any water which could be in there.

It could be anything really, from a small bit of grit in the jets to a stuck float bowl or a hole in a carb diaphragm as well as a dud spark plug or dud plug lead. It could even go further into the coils or the ignitor. But start with the simple stuff first.

Ok, thanks. I'll check once I get home.

Just a thought but did you give it a wash on sunday?

Hi
I filled up about a week ago, I did not wash it over the weekend. I did book it in for a mobile service yesterday and the guy said to put a bottle of injector cleaner in it as this will remove any water from the fuel and clean things up.
He said to run it for 200 k's and he check it next week when he does the service.

I rode in this morning and it's still missing and has a little back fire on deceleration at times. Plus I noticed it did not get as hot on the way in today.

Did you actually add injector cleaner?? What else did he do on the service??

4X 40mm Keihin CV40 carbs is what your bike has so no injectors to clean. I would drain the tank of all fuel start it and let it stall when it runs out of fuel, go get some nice fresh 98 octane fuel, and run it for a good 10 min to get the contaminated fuel out. (It will take a bit of cranking to get it started due the fuel bowls being empty etc.)

Or you could just undo the float bowl screws and drain the carbs. A lot easier than running it out of fuel. ;)

The lazy mans way is to let it run out :)

I questioned the guy about my bike being a carby bike and he said I KNOW IT IS, I HAVE WORKED ON 100'S. then he went on to say that the cleaner would help to remove any water in the fuel and that if it did not fix it he would look at it this Tuesday when he does the service.

But on the way home the other night I decided to take a look myself. So off came the tank and the air box. next was the search for the plugs, I have never looked at them before and after much looking and fiddling I found them under the stick coils :) I had to use a pair of long nose pliers to get the plugs out which was a bit of a pain. More so #4 as the air ram tube was in the way, so I had to remove the side fairing.

So I cleaned them all up, #2 and 3 were a bit dirty but the other two were not too bad. Next i saw that I must have gone over board with air filter oil as some had dripped out of the holes in the airbox and was over some of the wires and connectors.
I cleaned all of that up and inside the connectors and put it all back together. and now it runs very well.

Thanks for the help :)
