Ignition Coils - does side matter

Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:46 am

OK so the genuine Kawasaki Ignition coils are two different part numbers, one for the left side ie cylinders 1 and 4 and the right side cylinders 2 and 3. The left one is $170 and the right one $160

The left one is in stock and I can get it now, the right one (the one I think I need) has to come from Japan and will be three weeks. I'm going to replace both just for the fun of it (heaven knows what else would you do with a spare $170)

My question is....can anyone see why I can't temporarily take the new left one and stick it on the right side. The terminals will probably be arse about but I think I'm smart enough to get that right.

Any help would be mucho appreciado

If it has the same ignition timing, as in an even firing order, then it shouldn't matter I wouldn't think. The firing intervals would be the same for both coils wouldn't they?

It shouldn't damage anything to try... ;)

I have done it before glen, on the vfr400. Only difference was mounting lugs and the terminals, but they were coloured so couldn't stuff that up, cable tie sorted out the mounting :)

Thanks mate. I'll give it a shot. If you see a mushroom cloud spreading over kellyville you'll know I fucked it up. :)

That's correct, but assuming I can get leads 1 and 4 to reach cylinders 2 and 3 will it work ?

just buy one coil & use the plug wires off the old one if you have to...should be fine

Glen, I think I hinted at checking, but have you checked the ignition barrel and the kill switch to make sure they are not intermittently breaking contact? I'd hate for you to spend all this cash to find it's a dirty kill switch or a faulty ignition barrel or wiring!
