valve adjustment

Thu Apr 28, 2011 11:32 am

Hi, I have heard that the valves on a bike should be adjusted periodically, is this true? if it is, how often or how do yo tell when it is required? Also, I any suggestions if it is a big job, do I use a standard set of feeler guages?

I have a ZX6RR 2003

Thanks
Ben

Feeler gauges yes.

Factory recommend 24,000kms.

Sooner if your racing.

might be overdue then at close to 35000kms! - commuting only
I have a manual but haven't looked at it, is it a big job? what sort of time should I allow (ie should I wait for a weekend)

its a weekend job mate, just checkin them, allow for 4 hours?

if you need shims, its a day job.

Thanks, might put it off for a week or two - wait for a rainy weekend given that I have had the bike off the road because of the damn stator for weeks!

Valve adjustment is definently a day job. I have an electronic copy of the manual, 150MB tho.

Shim changes are something you need to prepare for. You either need a shim kit, or a good relationship with a local bike shop who will swap them out.

Remove rocker cover, measure clearances, record them, if all in spec leave. If some out of spec, remove Cams, measure shims, see if you can swap shims from cylinder to cylinder to get right clearances. If no combinations allow for all in spec, remove a replace those that are still out. Remit Cams, remeasure for peace of mind, put it all back together. Hth.

Any chance of you advising the specs or burning the manual to CD and posting (obviously I will pay you for your trouble and the CD)?

Thanks
Ben
