ZX6 gearbox

Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:53 pm

Hey all,

I am after some idea of what might be going on with the tracky's g'box. ZX6R 2007.

Rode it for the first time at Mallala track and had a few non-shifts at full noise leading up to the kink from 3rd, 4th and 5th probably top gear too.
This section is the fastest stretch with a flat out kink and i should have been in at least 4th changing to 5th just before entry.
Pulled up fairly hard on the shifter on the throttle chop and it wouldn't go up until I either clutched it and or backed off a little even then it took a fair bit of effort..

No where else on the track I have found the need to use 4th or higher other than out of the sweeper after the northern hairpin, being a wet track I didn't dare WOT as it was slippery as and power sliding anyway so it was not noticeable there.

Seems to me while the box is really loaded up it has this trouble, maybe a lever adjustment is all thats needed and hope it isnt a selector, see what happens next time.

What would be involved to check, fix, or replace a selector?

Thanks.

I'd have a look at the lever adjustment. I struggled with the gearbox on mine zx6 09 for at least a couple of sessions and it took a bit of adjusting to get it right. Especially when changing gears down the straight and I GP shift! I was hitting the rev limiter harder than Chris Brown on just about every gear other than 3rd (never go lower than 2nd at EC) but it improved it heaps.

Is till struggle a bit cause I find the gearbox on this bike doesn't communicate that 'click' as well as the R6 did but the gear indicator helps with that.

Ordered a Bazzaz QS to fix that once and for all! :kuda:

is the lever that attaches to the selector shaft at right angles to the shift rod?

No, the selector clamp on the rod is sitting towards the rear-set about 10- 15 degrees of 90deg.

=1 on this.

check the circlip on the shaft as it protudes the bike is nice and tight also. They can be dodgey and cause some free play on the selector

Feels that way.

sounds like a bent selector jon, not unusual for a track bike, see it all the time.

I always use a tiny bit of clutch, just enough to lighten the load slightly, even on up shifts, and I don't think I've ever missed a gear (on my '08). I know it's not 'race' to use the clutch but it works :)

Ok then has anyone have an electronic copy of the manual for a 2007 for Justin Case.

I will do all the easy stuff mentioned above first then worry about the selector shaft later, it appears easy enough to get at being a cassette type box or so I hope, and I appreciate the responses 8)

I wonder if it is worth sourcing another box or selector, I know someone who has one ;)

Yeah a bit, just thinking out loud and ahead of my self, just the idea of wasting a big effort to come interstate and get stuffed up by a part bothers me, especially if I can check it prior to leaving and having said part already sourced.

If i can swing it there is a 3 day meeting at Mac Park next weekend with a tuition day Thursday, good place to see if the easy adjustments fix it then look at the selector if it still is an issue...

Anyway thats me spilling my thoughts.
