just to confirm
will a zx7r standard rim take a 180 rear tyre?
i have someone telling me it wont take it at all
or maybe they mean its not the best set up for the track

Yes it will... I ran one on mine as its suppose to make em turn quicker...
Didn't really make any difference..
I prefered the 190 and just raised the rear end...

In the actual workshop manual it actually gives you a choice of a 180/55/17 or a 190/50/17 for the p model.
So the computer says yes!

The single best mod i ever did on mine. The 190 was used as OEM so the sbk boys could run them. Unless you're seriously getting on the gas exiting corners, you don't get enough weight transfer to generate enough load to make a 190 stick properly. I run a 180 on the road and a 190 on the track. Having said that, 190 is much more stable at low speeds for novice riders.

How are you goin, I would have thought the 190 would turn in quicker as it has a more triangular profile when put on the narrower rim where as the 180 is a flatter profile on the same rim which would turn in slower but give more straight line stability. cheers

I wonder how many who have tried both the 180 and 190 tires have tried the exact same brand to make it a fair comparison. I would find it very hard to tell much difference between the two based on numbers. The 180/55/17 has a 4mm taller sidewall than a 190/50/17 so overall height change is so small, I don't think that would be noticable. As far as flatter because it's on a larger rim, well actually you have to look at the size rim the tire was intended to go on in the first place from the manufacturer. I believe both the 190 and 180 are spec'd off a 6 inch rim, so they are as flat or triangular as they are meant to be based on that rim size, if you change the rim, they will both either flatten out or get more rounded. As far as tread width, they are 10mm difference, or you could say the 190 is 5mm wider from center to edge. Again, pretty small number, and I don't think I could notice the difference. Based off the numbers and common sense thinking, I would say the 190 should allow you slightly greater lean angle capability because degree of the angle from center to the edge of the side wall has to be greater if the tire is 5mm wider from center and the sidewall is 4mm shorter. I am no expert so if someone can give me the science behind something opposite, please do. I always want to learn more!

I suppose you are right there are quite a number of variables. The only statement that I could make is that given the same tire a narrower rim will increase the " triangularity " of the tire and create a faster turn in rate or quicker response but decrease straight line stability. this would also increase the max lean angle as you say and possibly max lean traction depending on tyre design. cheers

i asked the question because i had access to some really good 180 width tyres and id been told
that a 180 tyre " would not fit on the rim at all".
