Clipp-ons,

Sat Feb 06, 2010 8:15 pm

Hey guys,

As a few of you know on Autralia day I have had a small crash at EC turn 4

As a consequence I had to purchase some clipp ons, I got two sets a set for now and asome for next time

While they seem great quality, I noticed that they're solid bars, meaning the differnce is exactly double the weight.
The ones I'ver taken off were 0.45kg / set and the new ones which went on are 0.9kg / set.

We are thinking of searching around for a supplier, so before we do so, thought we might as well pick your brains  , what do you think?

Would the weight factor deter you to get the solid bars or would you just have one less cheeseburger

Thanks for input in advance :kuda:

Its about the same as not drinking a bottle of water prior to going out.
However i do not race and therefore do not give a hoot about excess weight (to a degree).

Do you need bar end weights with the new clip ons? If not, that would makes some difference. I wouldn't know where to go for Clip ons, but am considering it for the trackie (as I want to lower the bars, and have a few mods to make).

I use 4130 chrome moly tubing, its lighter than standard steel & has more tensile strength than alloy ..... ok it is heavier than alloy but it wont bend or sheer off as easy. I don't worry about bar end weights & just use either a wood to block the end or I as per the last ones I made I just welded up the ends.....10C piece fits nice :P
I have a chassis builder around the corner that builds drag cars & does roll cages for .... well cages  he imports the chrome moly direct so it's easy for me, I used to have to travel out to Bankstown airport before I got introduced to him.
Pete what is the external size & I will see if I have any laying around at work.

Last year I bought a 6m length of alum tube and made about 10 sets.
The tube was 22.3mm diamter, 6061 alloy (structural) and 5.9mm thick.
I was trying to find 3mm thick tube as it would be 1/2 the weight and in 6061 alloy strong enough, but no one in Aus had it in stock. You can get it from O/S though.
Glen from Allfixed milled the ends out to 18mm id and I put plastic plugs in the ends, but they could also fit the expanding type bar ends.
