Crash Knobs

Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:58 pm

I'm looking at getting some crash knobs for my 07 ZX10. I've heard they can cause more damage than they save. So any experiences or info would be good. Also which ones to buy. Kaneg have them for $95 or the original Oggys are $300 plus.
Thanks for your help..... Brad

saved me 3 times so far. One of them was at a decent pace as well.

Depending on the type of accident you have crash knobs can cause frame damage, in my experience seeing crashes on ride days they generally save more then they ruin, so I would get them.

...and they'll save you heaps if you have a stupid fall eg your bike gets pushed/knocked over etc. I think on the balance you're better with them then without them

+1

they have saved some damage to my 12 r ...after it fell off the stand
while on a slope . One scuffed crash knob + one scuffed bar end
no fairing damage

worthwhile imho

Food for thought re 06/07 ZX10R fairing costs ;

#55028006688 COWLING,CNT,LH,EBONY qty 1 $463.24 (outer , centre L/H)
#550280071 COWLING,FR,LH qty 1 $46.07 (inner , centre L/H) :o
#560520799 MARK,CNT COWLING,NINJA qty 1 $58.74 ('Ninja' decal for centre fairing) :? :o
#920390023 RIVET qty 3 $7.53 ( plastic rivets for securing inner cowling section ) ie each side of rad'.

Total = $575.58 via Kawasaki Aust
Bearing in mind this does not include the usual items ie casings / indicator assemblies , gear selectors , pegs , etc ,etc....

ie If a decent set of crash knobs only save a portion of the above and or minimise damage to the point the bike can be ridden home, well worth it I reckon.... ;) 8)

Go the crash nobs, faring cost heaps to fix, lets face it if you had them in a crash bad enough to stuff the frame, its a pretty bad crash

Brad, with regards to which ones to get, have a look at the fitment & where the knobs sit, some racers wont use the ones that bolt straight onto the frame like a ZXR 750 for instance as they had a tendency to punch a hole in the frame with a hard impact :?
You will usually find that the more expensive ones will have special brackets etc so you are getting what you pay for.

Yeah that is my concern......... :? the knobs on the 07' ZX10 appear to bolt directly onto the engine head & even with a small impact, it appears that the knobs will crack the head..... :(

The engine is stronger than a flat section of aluminium frame & it sounds like the mounting point is an enging mount so it would be strong enough for the job........ any Gumby owners here that can elaberate?
