Gearbox Issues - Not the 10 though - It Lives !!!

Wed Jul 02, 2008 1:45 pm

Oh no no no the 10 she's a fine, however......

It seems we may have a new addition in the Garage. My young bloke looks like he's picked up a 2001 RM125 in fair nick for $400. It was his bosses son's who unfortunately had a real nasty car acco a couple of years ago and now can't ride or drive anymore.

Anyway the thing is fine except for a gearbox problem. You can get into first no worries and it takes off and rides fine in first but won't change to second or any other gear. Apparently when it's cold sometimes it will get 2nd but then pops out pretty well straight away. We'll pull it apart and have a look but do any of the gearbox guru's out there have a theory on what it might be.

Cheers

As a stab .... Selector Arm?... if it is only selecting in one direction.

from what i've read on here & elsewhere my money would be a bent fork as well.

bent selector arm is a definite possibilty - also the selector arm has a spring fitted - if this spring is broken, it won't allow the selector arm to return properly.......may cause sticking in one gear ....

if its jumping out of gear, that will be wear in the gear dogs and/or selector fork/s on the output shaft in the box.

you may be able to fix a broken selector arm spring without splitting the cases. Anything else will need a poke around inside the gearbox to fix.

Thanks guys. We'll pull it apart this weekend and see what it is. For the price I don't see he can go too far wrong. It's got a fmf pipe on it as well.

Here's the new beast. Wanky graphics but they'll go pretty quickly

He's actually pretty handy on a bike in the bush but a red mist moment almost cost him dearly. Hooning around a mates property racing each other he's gone to go past his mate, both of them on YZ250f's, left the narrow little trail and ploughed through knee high grass when all of a sudden 100 to zero is achieved in 0.1 sec when he gets a tree stump. The end of the handlebar goes through his chest armour  and gets him in the lower abdomen. Didn't poke a whole in it but ruptured his bowel, intestine, abdomen wall, tore blood vessels etc. He now sports a zipper from his chest to his knob (apparently chicks dig big scars). In eight years of racing it was the only injury that stopped him riding. He's all good now though.

$13.50 later plus about another $100 in bits to tidy it up and it's all fixed.

Turns out the spring loaded arm that holds the gear selector in place once you change gear was bent. In its previous life it threw a tooth off the water pump drive and the tooth got caught between the inside of the case and the arm. They've gone to change gears, it's forced the arm and it bent enough to stop the selector. The part was $13.50 but we bought a bit of other gear as well.

Had it's first outing yesterday and it all went fine :) :) :)

Now if i close my eyes hard enough I can pretend it's a Kawasaki.....
