Spray the inside and outside with WD40/Inox or equivalent to stop it rusting, wrap it up in a blanket or rags and chuck it up on a shelf

best to take it off after its cooled down after a nice long run and while there's been no humidity in the air . That is a bit of insurance that there's no moisture in there when you wrap it up.

Be a bit careful with WD40 and other penetrating oils as they have a corrosive effect when left on for extended periods, especially on high carbon steel.

Yeah, better of to spray with lanotec, soft seal or similar.

WD isn't much of a preservative as he said
Never thought much about corrosion on a stored exhaust - unless you are looking to preserve it for the next 50 years just rip it off and hang it from the roof of the shed or garage. Unlikely to be banged around or have anything heavy put on top of it if it's hanging up as a dust collector.

ditto, but who knows where the OP has his bike stored, could be in a cave in tibetan mountains for all we know.
I figure take it off after a good run and throw it in the box the new exhaust came in and leave it at that

With the CBR I took it off, did the WD40 thing, wrapped it and stuck it in the bix the replacement exhaust came in. 2 years later I sold it in perfect condition.
The 10's cans have never been used, so they are in the box the bike shop supplied them in. I haven't even opened it.
