Paper shims under rotor??

Postby ferretboy » Mon Apr 11, 2011 1:03 pm

Hi
I currently have paper shims under my front rotor (ZZR250) to prevent braking vibration. Should I replace it or will it be sweet as is.

Background:
I had severe brake vibration and I assumed it was a warped disc. out by 0.3mm with dial indicator.
I bought a new one from S3 and thought that this one also warped after a couple of months (wasn't installed with dial indicator.. idiot). I had this rotor remachined by S3 (thanks Jeff). But when I reinstalled it using a dial indicator this time, it was still out by 0.3mm. Tried rotating the disc around 180 degrees and wallah. Mounting surface is out.
So to get me out of trouble I cut out paper washers for under rotor studs (different quantity for each stud, not bad for 12pm on a Friday night). After removing wheel and testing a zillion times I'm now now back to 0.05mm and a very happy camper. Spent over $200 and fixed it with a piece of paper.
Now my work buddies are trying to convince me that paper shims are dodgy and will wash out (what do they know). I'm not convinced due to the pressure from the studs on the rotor, where can it go? (and I don't want to pull the front wheel off another zillion times, to get it spot on with plastic or brass).

Who is right?

Cheers
Col

Did you use that dodgy Chinese paper or the quality Aussie stuff?

Actually to do it properly you need to do the reading hot as most disc vibration disappear when hot  How ever paper gasket have reduced oil leaks for hundreds of years :kuda: ask the Egyptians

Kelloggs packets are far better for shims.

I would have tohught Sanitarium or Uncle tobys would be a far healthier choice than Kelloggs Gos but you're far more mechanically adept than me so i'll surrender to your advanced age/experience :)
