spark plugs/ ignition problems

Postby Amir » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:13 pm

Hey i got a zx2r... problems started after a few weeks i dropped the bike around a corner.
when it is cold. i have to use the choke to start it. Then even if i turn the choke off it wont rev up any higher than 2000 rpm!! until is all warmed up... I have problems starting it all the time
Now since yesterday it doesn't start at all. battery is fine, i am thinking it is the spark plugs, or the ignition.

I am just wondering if someone have had the same experience with their bike.... and can help me out here...
What else can i check before changing my spark plugs?

any help will be greatly appreciated :)

the cold starting problem sounds like a normal cold start problem i used to have with my gpx250. Once she was warm there was no fuss though. I'd think about draining the carbs and checking the idle screws as well, which fixed my gpx250 up after she fell over. I guess double check that the voltage and amps your battery is giving out is fine, and then sparks are only $8 each or something so no big loss if they dont fix it and drain the carbs as well. If that doesnt fix it then im well past my experiences :P

***Scartch measuring the amps... And just because someone says that 'flat' is 11.5V or something. I've had mine at 12-12.3 and still needed charging to get the bike to kick. But thats a 600.

It is either spark or fuel. I doubt you have compression problems or any engine issues. Check the plugs, you say you dropped it. It's possible when you dropped it the carbs leaked into the combustion chamber and fouled the plugs. Take them out, if the electrodes are black, there is your problem, (maybe). If that is not it check for spark, (pull one of the spark plugs out and hook it back up to the spark plug wire and touch the plug to some bear metal for a ground and crank it over, the spark plug should be sparking a strong blue ark across the gap. If all that is ok check the fuel, after you crank it, if it is not starting the spark plugs should be covered with gas, maybe the carbs are not getting enough fuel or maybe you are getting too much gas, probably not though as you say you have to choke it to start. If the spark plugs are ok and you are getting spark and fuel and it still doesn't start check the compression, low compression will cause hard starting. I hope this helps. A good shot of Jim Beam and a good Aussie beer will make all things clear.

You get good Aussie beers over there? I saw Fosters and VB in Ottawa. That ain't good shit. Looking for someone local who'll stock Whistler though. Try some if you find it. Might have to road trip it though 8)

I would agree that Fosters is not the best Aussie beer, but it is better than any U.S. beer. Have you tried Coors, Bud, Miller or any of the other brands of cow piss produced over here? It's a poor excuse for rat piss let alone beer. We do have a couple of small breweres that produce an acceptable beer, but the quality is somewhat inconsistant. I like Cooper,s or Murray's, but have not seen Whistler's over here. I look forward to my trip to Brisbane to visit my nephew so I can try some of your domestic brews. How are the Aussie jails?
