Please excuse the following stupid questions

SO firstly, when i got my bike the dude who i bought it from said something about keeping my rev's low, so i've been keeping them about 4000 rpm but i not only feel like i'm riding a lawn mower, i very quickly run out of gears to change in to. Should i be doing that? was he right? it red lines at 13/14 so i'm no where near that. It's a real pain in the ass to turn corners cause as soon as i slow down i pretty much have to change gears or i chugg. and what will happen on a highway when i can only go to 6th gear, i'm goona freak if the rev's are way high

Secondly, i went for a ride jsut then and decided that just this once (incase i blew up) i would get my rev's abit higher, so i was hitting about 6-8 which felt better to turn cause i'm so worrying about what gear i'm in and it's also alot easier to change gears too - not so jerky (i drive a manual car so i hope i'm not all that incapable of doing it smoothly). The problem is that the bike started to vibrate abit, not the wheels or anything but just the engine itself (i think).

THIRDLY, when i got home and turned the bike off some fan kicked in, well atleast it sounded like a fan. It went for about 20 or so seconds then stopped, but i had the key out so i'm abit confused as to 1) what it was doing and 2) how the fan-sounding-thing was working when i had the key in my hand. I didn't do anything out the ordinary. I got the bike into position, held the clutch and got in to 1st gear - killswitch - clutch off - stand down - steering lock - got off - key out.

Relating back to my second question - when i rev higher the exhaust sounds like it's going to burst or explode. i got a yoshi exhaust that's going to be fitted soon, will this stop that issue? am i just too used to the sound of my car?

Hello the_shez, Is it a brand new bike and you worried about the running in stage???? why do you have to have under 4k on the revs??

yes Tinman it is a brand new bike, I'M not really worried, but the dude who sold it to me said be careful, it's a critical stage, don't rev to high and for some reason i just rememberd 4, sooo subsequently i've been trying to stay under 4. I must really look like the biggest idiot :P but i guess that's why i'm asking.

Hey shez - read the owners manual re: break in procedure - main thing to remember is not to "lug" the engine i.e. don't be in a too high a gear for the road conditions. Don't be too worried about going over the recommended rev limit occasionally. :D

If it's got wheels or tits, it's gonna give you trouble !

The most important thing about running your bike is that you don't prolong in at a certain rev all the eg. 6 gear at 4k on a hwy is bad for it if you know what I mean...

Depending on how many K's you have on it now you maybe be able to go a little higher, It doesn't hurt it if goes over as long it doesn't stay there for to long. ;)

For the fan some bikes when they get hot the fan stays on even if you do take the key out! but I'm not to sure about that model,

I think its something like under 4k revs for the first 800k. check the manual. it doesn't take long but as tinman said vary the revs. if you are a bit patient you will have a bike that will run well for a long time. when I ran my 650 in I just got to the 1k service as fast as I could.

fans do that. if the engine is hot you want it to keep going to cool it down. :oops:

Thanks guys,

i had a look at the manual and it said 0-800kms i should not exceed 4000rpm and then from 800-1600kms i should not exceed 6000rpm. I guess it's not really much of a problem, i obviously want to do whats best for the bike, but it gets frustrating at times. Where i ride i have to vary the rev's often because i'm almost contantly turning or needing to slow down and the fastest i've been is only 60kms/h as i've been riding in backstreets due to lack of license atm :oops: iv'e only got 750kms to go before i can get up to 6000rpm :P. Shouldnt take me too long once i can legally ride, and actually going somewhere instead of around in circles.

Once you get your licence and are on the road, you should be right to change at about 6000-8000rpm... They recommend 4000rpm on everything from 125cc up! But thats ridiculous on that 250 as your labouring the engine... That little 250 is designed to redline but obviously you want to take care to run it in properly! I had one and took it to 8000rpm regularly in the first 1000km. After that it was redlining fairly regularly so dont be afraid to get that little motor working. They have been designed to do it. The motor has been around in the GPX and ZZR for ages! Keep the revs changing, shift through the gears and have fun ;)
