I recon all school zones should have big flashing lights. They work for me. I think some prick hiding with a camera will only cause public anger.

I missed the point as to why this is a joke?
I would love to see flashing lights outside my kids school reminding people that there are kids around.

agreed, i dont have sprats, so i haven't got a effing clue as to when school holidays are on. I keep having to ask my mrs about school holidays as she encounters them more than i do in her line of work. The lights work for me, i see them, i'll stick to the speed limit, or at least be within a handfull of km/h of it at the WORST. Partly because i think its the right thing to do, partly because i dont want a copper to start with the spicegirls "stop right now, thankyou very much" tunes after me.
It was scruby piping up again that is the effing joke btw, the rest of the article i pretty much agree with.

The fact that it is illegal to report the location of mobile speed cameras in Australia on the radio or any other form of communication shows just what they are being used for, revenue raising. In NZ they report the locations of the cameras 2 - 3 times every hour with the message: 'Now you know where they are, SLOW DOWN because THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE THERE FOR'
How is taking money off somebody after the fact going to make the road safer? They already went through the whole controlled zone over the speed limit therefore putting children's lives at risk. If they had encountered a set of big fuck-off flashing lights or seen a mobile camera unit, I'm sure they would have backed off a bit or at least been made aware of their velocity and done something about it....... Why is this so hard to understand?
Just quickly, next years income tax return has been made easier and reduced to only two parts:
Part one: How much did you earn during last financial year?
Part two: Send it

Scruby is an absolute fuckwit. Why the hell do we put up with the useless prick (apologies to all useful pricks out there)
Big arse flashing lights would be the best way to do it by a long shot. Would anyone seriously want to go over 40 in a school zone? I certainly don't but unfortunately if you don't regularly drive during school times you can easily find yourself in a school zone over the speed limit. What the hell are covert speed camera's going to do? They'll fine you after you've already sped through the zone, surely doing everything possible to slow you down before you get into the zone is the answer. If they were dead serious they'd park a clearly visible police car before the zone rather than at the end of it hidden with a camera.

The big flashing lights we got here are a bigger joke. The school is on a 4 lane highway with an 80k limit. Access is not necessarily from said highway and it has a pedestrian overpass. Some people. 'specially those with a penchant for urban assault vehicles simply have no idea what to do when they pick up their kids and create absolute mayhem ... but only in the immediate vicinity of the school.
Then some bright spark decides to put big flashing lights up. Mind you, there is no speed limit change, just the lights - so a kilometre before you get there people are jumping on the brakes, changing lanes and generally not knowing wtf they're supposed to be doing. So now we get two kilometres of mayhem instead of a hundred metres.

a roll out of covertly operated speed cameras will only save the lives (sorry lifestyle !!! ) of the company directors of said equipment.....and the odd beaurocrat...the old visual deterent i think is still the best big flashing lights at schools great.... would save running through the 40 zone unnoticed in vic and being flashed by one of our COVERTLY run speed cameras...........i have always found seeing a police vehicle or warning sign of some significance cause to adjust my possibly bad (on occasion ) habits........
possible 2400 speed cameras for nsw between the hours of 7.00 till 9.00 and 2.30 till 4.00 think off the money
one would hope the flashing light s would be fairly close to the facility...........where pre and after school mahem occurs

The signs are usually bang on the start of the 40km/h zone, which is usually a run of at least 150m or so. One thing you'll notice is that the cameras are always well within the zone (i.e. 50m), i remember hearing some dicussions a while back about giving "allowance" for changing speed, but then i've also heard cops make reference to there being no excuse and you've got to be doing the lower speed by the time you hit the sign, etc.

someone should shoot scruby, hes a waste of space................. yeah cameras make roads safer........... hey so i guess that also means that if i carry my digital slr with me where ever i go then i will be safer too..... frickin idiot
i agree there should be flashing lights at all school zones, i dont have kids so have no idea when school hols etc are on/off they should not just be at the start and finish of the zone either if there is traffic lights in between. on many occasions i have ben doing 40 stopped at a set of lights, zone out and forget its a school zone when lights go green.
i still however think there could be far more prudent ways of protecting the kids who obviously have no common sense these days as in 40 zones i find most of my time is spent looking at speedo with glances at the road, sad to say but i reckon if a kid runs in front of me im going right over the top of it doing 40 and i have seen what 45 does to a drunk adult, neither he or my car looked to pretty after

so does that mean we should also be doing the faster limit by the time we hit the sign too

i wish, however i suspect the lower speed is what they can get you for so no good trying that excuse.... though i wonder if anyone's tried that excuse in court.
