Top Olympic comments

Here are the top nine comments made by NBC sports commentators so far during the Summer Olympics that they would like to take back:

So funny . . . I just had to share this!!!

1. Weightlifting commentator: 'This is Gregorieva from Bulgaria . I saw her snatch this morning during her warm up and it was amazing.'

2. Dressage commentator: 'This is really a lovely horse and I speak from personal experience since I once mounted her mother.'

3. Paul Hamm, Gymnast: 'I owe a lot to my parents, especially my mother and father.'

4. Boxing Analyst: 'Sure there have been injuries, and even some deaths in boxing, but none of them really that serious.'

5. Softball announcer: 'If history repeats itself, I should think we can expect the same thing again.'

6. Basketball analyst: 'He dribbles a lot and the opposition doesn't like it. In fact you can see it all over their faces.'

7. At the rowing medal ceremony: 'Ah, isn't that nice, the wife of the IOC president is hugging the cox of the British crew.'

8. Soccer commentator: 'Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field.'

9. Tennis commentator: 'One of the reasons Andy is playing so well is that, before the final round, his wife takes out his balls and kisses them... Oh my God, what have I just said?'

All sounded a little too familiar...

Comments: The exact provenance of all these "bloopers" is impossible to pin down, but we can safely say they were not uttered, as claimed in the most recent version of the list to land in my inbox, during the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Most of the alleged quotes were already circulating in 2002; some date back to 1999 or earlier. Lists of this kind are endlessly revised and recycled, to the point where even journalists mistakenly assume they have been properly sourced and authenticated.

The most outrageous actual flub committed by a TV commentator during the 2008 Olympics was uttered by Venezuelan sportscaster Willie Oviedo on TVes:

"Never in the Olympic Games has any mortal, any living being been able to win eight gold medals. Only Michael Phelps in the Olympic Games of Munich in the year 1972, over there in the Germany of Hitler, where he refused to give him the medals himself back then."

  the funniest thing about this is = the original quote was supposed to be about *golf* balls, and it was Arnold Palmers missus who allegedly made the blooper..........way back in the 70's !!!

This list has been around (in one form or other) since the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, and some of the quotes are earlier than that....

but yes, every time the Olympics / Commonwealth games / World Cup etc, come around.......out they come...in one form or another ( ie in #7, the quote I saw years ago was about the wife of the IOC 'kissing' the cox of the British crew, not hugging him..)
