Jamie Stauffer (Ninja ZX-10R Superbike) and Josh Waters (Ninja ZX-6RR Supersport) are both in confident moods prior to this weekend’s second round of the Australian Superbike Championship.
“We went really well here at our test prior to Phillip Island, and we’ve just come back from a really positive test at Winton…” said a smiling Stauffer. “The team concentrated on two aspects of the bike’s handling – its front to rear balance and its geometry, and we’ve also done some work on the engine management system. So far everything we tried at Winton has worked well and the bike’s got much better traction than before along with a heap more mid-corner grip provided by the excellent new Michelin tyres.
“I did a lot of laps including a 30 lap tyre endurance test and they came out of it amazingly well – I was lapping under Winton’s lap record and was going just as fast after 30 laps as I was after the first couple. So hopefully we’ll see a green machine on top of the podium on Sunday… I’m really looking forward to it!”
Josh Waters is a quiet young man, but he was happy and laughing after his day testing at Winton. “Wow, that was heaps better, we’ve made so much progress here. I was having a problem with getting a feel for the front end of the new ZX-6RR and we changed a lot of settings in the front forks. The difference is stunning – I can now feel everything the front tyre is doing and that’s helping me into, through and out of the corners.
“We ran old tyres all day in the knowledge that if we can make the bike work well on old tyres, it’ll work even better on new ones. As we’re back to the two race format from now on, it means I should have fresh rubber and I’m confident of getting the 6RR on or at least close to the podium. I really like Eastern Creek and think we can give the fast boys a real headache this coming weekend.”
The Kawasaki Racing Team Senior Teams Co-ordinator, Scott Breedin, was in an equally positive mood. “I am really pleased with the team, the riders and the bikes. We made real progress at Winton, the new Michelin tyres are excellent and the support of our major sponsor Fuchs Silkolene has given us the ability to get this extra testing done. We had a great test at Eastern Creek prior to the first round at Phillip Island and I’m very confident we’ll be breaking out the podium hats for both riders here this weekend.”
