Australian Superbike Championship Round 1 – Phillip Island.
Jamie Stauffer (Superbike #27) and Josh Waters (Supersport) have benefitted from two pre-season test sessions in the build up to the 2005 Australian Superbike Championship, the first round kicking off at picturesque Phillip Island this coming weekend.
In an all-out assault on the Australian Superbike Championship (ASC) the KRT will be fielding Jamie Stauffer on the Ninja ZX-10R Superbike and teenager Josh Waters on the Ninja ZX-6RR Supersport bike. At the most recent test on Sydney’s 3.93km Eastern Creek circuit both had plenty of track time to give their bikes a good shakedown in preparation for their first Phillip Island track session during qualifying on Saturday morning.
"We’ve changed a few things for this year and we’re trying out a different rear shock in an attempt to maximise traction out of corners" said Jamie in regard to his Ninja ZX-10R. "Luckily, the bike is basically the same as last year, we’re just going for that little bit extra to take us from the third step of the podium to the top.”
"Jamie was lapping Eastern Creek consistently in the 1 minute 32 second bracket – that’s right on lap record pace, so we’re hopeful we’ll be on track for a great result at Phillip Island!" said team boss Scott Breedin. "We’re getting very close to a good set of baseline settings and using last year’s data has enabled us to pick up where we left off and then go a bit better still... "
On the other side of the pit garage, youngster Josh Waters was riding the all-new ZX-6RR. "It’s a jet!" was Josh’s initial impression. "The bike is a fair bit more powerful than last year’s bike which I rode at the first test. We’ve obviously got some work to do to extract as much as we can out of the bike for Phillip Island, but the basics are there." Scott Breedin was impressed. "Josh rode well during our tests, now he’s on the new bike and managed consistently fast lap times which improved as the day progressed. He’s still adapting to the bike but has a lot of natural talent – he’ll do very well, especially as the season unfolds."
Kawasaki Racing Team Manager, Murray Sayle said, "the expectation is to fight for podium positions, especially in the Superbike class where we have the bike data from last year and Jamie back on the Ninja ZX-10R. The 600 is all new and we’ve not had much opportunity to set it up but it’s going to be very competitive horsepower-wise. I’m sure Josh and the Ninja ZX-6RR will get faster as the weekend progresses and Josh gets an opportunity to continue his work in setting up the new bike by putting some high speed Phillip Island miles behind him."
