MOTOGP world champion Valentino Rossi has made a remarkable return to action just over a month after shattering his leg in a crash.
The Italian rider tested a Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike at a private testing session at the Misano circuit, completing 11 laps before returning to the track for another 15.
Rossi, who is still using crutches, broke his right leg on June 5 during practice for the Italian Grand Prix.
Following the accident, he had two and a half hours of surgery to repair a displaced and exposed fracture of his right tibia.
Rossi, 31, was expected to be out of action for three to four months and unable to race until late 2010, but has returned quicker than expected.
"We took this test to understand how we continue from here and if I am able to ride a motorbike,'' Rossi said.
"The test went well because at least I was able to ride, even if I have a lot more work to do before riding in a Moto GP.
"I had some pain in the calf, in the knee and in my back, but overall I missed some of the power in my shoulders and some movement in my ankles.''
The seven-time world champion is targeting the Czech Republic GP in Brno on August 15 for his competitive comeback but is not ruling out an even earlier return - at the German GP on July 18.
"I would love to return at Sachsenring, but it is too early to say,'' Rossi said.
"We are about 12 days away from it and we have to wait and see how well my recuperation goes in the next few days.''

He breaks his leg, has bone sticking out through the skin and 4 1/2 weeks later he's back on the bike.... Respect!
