ZX-10Rs are Quick at Queensland

Scott Charlton, accompanied by stand in racer, Nick Henderson, took to the track in an aggressive manner on board his ZX-10R at the 4th and 5th rounds of the Australian Superbike Championships at Queensland Raceway on 11-13 July. After missing the previous round due to a broken scaphoid, Scott Charlton wasted no time getting back to form, finishing inside the top ten in all four races for the double header. Nick Henderson, who is riding in place of the injured Shannon Johnson, rode well to finish just outside the top ten in each of his Superbike races.

Concerned about Scott Charlton’s injury and fitness level, KRT were unsure whether to race him in QLD. With Scott keen to compete, KRT manager, Dave Cullen, decided to go with him for the Superbike class. With the weekend’s double header requiring Scott to race eight races if he were to compete in both the Superbike and Supersport classes, the call was made for Scott to compete in just the Superbike class. Nick Henderson also competed for KRT on board the Ninja ZX-6R in the Supersport class.

Frustrated at having to watch the previous round from the sidelines, Scott came out firing on board the powerful ZX-10R in his first Superbike race in Saturday’s round 4. Scott rode well to cross the line in 7th place then backed that up with a 10th place in the second race. Scott then went on to finish 8-10 in Sunday’s round 5 to finish inside the top ten in both rounds, taking 9th place in each.

Scott was happy to be back on board the ZX-10R, saying, “It feels great to be back out on the track. I was pleased with the 7th place but not so happy with the 10th due to brake pads glazing up. The wrist is getting real good, it gave me a bit of grief on that 1st left hander but thanks to Mark from Racesafe and the great job he did in taping it up each morning, I was able to race reasonably comfortably. The Kawasaki is getting better every time I go out and I can’t wait for Tasmania.”

KRT manager, Dave Cullen, says, “We have made positive and steady progress on the new Ninja ZX-10R Superbike. As the Championship gains momentum, so do the advancements in the testing and tuning of the new Ninja. The 10s were quick on a track that requires raw power, unfortunately we dropped a few places this weekend due to brake pads glazing up. Overall I’m pleased with the improvements we’re making. The whole team’s been working hard at getting the ZX-10R to the front of the field and feedback from our competitors is positive with people commenting that the Ninja is very fast as we’re getting better set ups.”

“While Shannon and Scott have been injured, Damon Buckmaster, Marty Cragill and Nick Henderson have all been of great benefit in testing the ZX-10R, helping us to achieve a much better package. We’re really looking forward to having Shannon back for round 6 in Tasmania and are anticipating improved results.”

With Shannon Johnson making his comeback from injury, KRT is back to full strength for round 6 of the Australian Superbike Championships at Simmons Plains, Tasmania on 30-31 August. Watch for Shannon Johnson and Scott Charlton going all out to gain lost championship points and look for podium finishes.
