[PRESS RELEASE]

Phillip Island 5/03/2006

NIETO TOP PSG-1 KAWASAKI CORSE MAN IN AUSTRALIA
Fonsi Nieto (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) ended a sometimes tough Phillip Island race weekend with the best points scores of all three PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse riders, taking an eighth and a ninth in what were warm and sunny conditions. His first race eighth is the high water mark of the team this season so far, and helped put him in the overall top ten. Nieto had to pass his team-mate Chris Walker (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) in both 22-races to take his final placings, with Walker, tenth in each race, struggling with chatter and grip in the final parts of the races. The hard left hand corners at Phillip Island provide a tough test for race rubber, with Nieto managing his best of the three. Regis Laconi (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) scored points in race one, but a bad start in race two, allied to decreasing tyre performance, limited him to a non-points scoring finish in the second race.

FONSI NIETO: 8th & 9th – 19 Points, 10th Overall: “I got a bad start in race one, which made it hard to pass the others. I suppose two top ten finishes are OK, but it could have been even better if we had not lost so much time at the beginning. But I am top Kawasaki finisher today, so not too bad.” CHRIS WALKER: 10th & 10th – 12 Points, 14th Overall: “I could go fast to start with but I ended up with grip and chatter problems, which meant that I couldn’t do any more. The fact that Fonsi finished higher than us showed that the bike is capable of a bit more.”

REGIS LACONI: 13th & 16th – 6 Points, 19th Overall: “The first race was better because I made a batter start, which made things easier. In race two my start was so bad and it was not so easy to pass the other guys. At half the race distance I had no more side grip on the rear and I could not do any more. I had to wait to open the throttle, which is not what you want.”
