My new toy, finally............2021 ZX6R

Sat Dec 19, 2020 4:58 pm

My dream bike has been the 6R for as long as I can remember & a few weeks ago, after a couple of months wait, it arrived & I started my relationship with her.

It's more than I ever expected, so much more beautiful in person than the pics suggest & coming from a 250 for the last 11 years, this thing was quite intimidating initially (first 10 min lolol).

So, not much of a review yet but this honeymoon phase should last years, 'Love' doesn't even come close to describing how I feel about it.

Cheers Guys

Not sure what I can review as you'd all know what the deal is with a bike like this.

At this stage I've been taking it easy due to the break in period & being new to this level of power, speaking of which, holy shit does this thing haul arse, & that's just a few quick bursts up to about 12k in 2nd, now I get the whole 'horizon turns to a blur very quickly' type comments in some bike reviews.

The bike is also considerably easier to ride in most respects than the 250, more mass & wider tyres are surely the reason for straighter lines & wobble-less stopping.

Comfort on these things tends to be a compromise but it's amazingly comfy, again better than the 250, how the hell do they manage that?

The dash is quite easy to read at all times & well laid out. One thing I'm not sure about is the power mode, no discernible difference between low & full, maybe it's the top of the rev range backs off the power or the traction control has something to do with it, that definitely stops the rear lighting up on take off ;)

Got some miles ahead of me to get fully acquainted with her but she's most definitely a dream come true ...............plus some.

Be sure to use the full rev range!

Obviously make sure it is a full operating temp, and do both of the following a number of times during the first few hundred kays:

1. Rev up to redline - use ~half throttle, so just let it spin up easy and hold it there for a few seconds. Ease off for a while (change up and potter along) and then repeat.
2. Lug the motor through mid-range, say 3000 revs in 4th and give it a lot of throttle and let it lug up to 7000 revs. Ease off and repeat.

These two (seemingly contradictory) things do different things. Firstly "2" assists in the bedding process with good gas pressure behind the rings. In the case of "1", forces rise exponentially with revs, and piston crown flex becomes significant - the ring travel is a touch more at redline then at redline - 1000. So doing this helps bedding in the entire bore range.

They will have done a lot of this on the dyno in the factory, so if all this sounds "too hard" then just ride it normally. The most important point is do not baby it because it's new (short of "finding your feet" on your new bike, of course).

This is very similar to what the guy at Brisans said so I've done pretty close to it, I know not to plod around like it's made of tissue but also don't flog it senseless, so basically ride it normally most of the time.

I'm just passed the break in now so when I get a chance, I'll be seeing what more she can do (safely of course).
