Nice pictures, may i suggest a longer exposure without the flash if possible.

Also it looks like your camera was having a few issues locking it's focus on the bikes. Some cameras don't have very good auto distance detection (perfect example is our olympus e-p1) in low light conditions due to a lack of autofocus light. I have found that using a torch to set focus distance, then turned the torch off and letting the long exposure do its thing has worked well.

i agree. the nicest pictures up there are the ones with the longer exposure and using the ambient light to cast more natural shadows.
Some instances the light might seem really too dim but if you use an average iso and use a cable release just leave the shutter open for 5 minutes. I remeber doing a long exposure of the night sky in wollongong, left it out for about an hour, came back the sky was white ! hehe

Thanks for the tips lads.

I am using a $150 Kodak ZD710. 7.1 MP which is pretty much full auto. I should grab the manual and see what its capable of. I did try a few modes and play with it, but never changed any settings. Oh, the best pic (Ducati with War memorial in the background) was taken with a longer exposure and in my hands. No tripod.

Image

Ill see what the camera is capable of and experiment more.

*EDIT*

Stuffed about for a bit.

Camera can do a little more than i thought.

The 2 pic's are taken in the same spot, sitting on the balcony, no flash 10 second timer to limit shake from pushing the button. First pic on full auto, second pic on manual.

I'd go halfway between the two on that one, but from the looks you've started to get the hang of it.
A tripod is certainly a worthwhile investment.

One of these is pretty cool if you can find a place to stash it when on the bike.

I have one of these little babies and they work well with anything up to a medium size camera
(my D100 is just a bit too heavy for me to feel confident in it).

I went out at about 3 am and took some pics. The camera only has basic settings to play with compared to my old EOS3 film SLR. Sadly, i dont have it anymore as it got stolen

I love photography, but this camera is really only as good as a point and shoot.

Took the following pics, 4 of about 50. The camera is really no good at night. Chewed through 2 sets of energizer lithiums in 50 shots.....

The Mighty Rex in bed.

This is the place i took a lot of pics at last night.

Full Zoom out.

Near full Zoom in.

I am approx 1.5 k's away from the War Memorial when taking these pic's. I had the manual and was trying out lots of settings. I guess ill just have to keep trying...... I would dearly love a new DSLR but just cant afford one right now.

hahaha i agree, the camera does take up alot of battery on them long exposures. Normally you would be doing 1/100s photos but when your going sec thats 800 times longer :P

If you like photography you should get a dslr, so much better pictures :D

this is a 1 hour exposure
