New Era Racing

In 1996 I raced a cosway Zx6r. Ever since I have always had this idea of trying to track it down, and buy it back. I started hunting about a year ago, and after 10 months found nothing.

So thinking that it had gone to god, I found another one that had been built by the same builder (gavin cosway) and bought it.

Two days after buying this bike, I accidently found out where my bike might have headed to. So after tracking down the phone number I called the person who had supposedly at one stage owned it. He still had it as luck would have it, and even offered it for sale. So i bought this one as well. it was very close to the spec i originally raced it in as well, which made it even more attractive.

The other bike that i bought turns out to be one of Kevin Curtains bikes from 1996, with which he rode to victory in the 1996 Aus SS champoinship. My bike is Actually one of Troy Bayliss bikes from 1995, which came second in the championship in 1995.

I picked them up last week and on a whim, raced the silver one at Broadford on the weekend

1 set up for wet, the other dry - obviously a Mexi-can

The purple one one the left is one of kev curtains old 96' bikes, but has had all the good bits robbed off it over the years. it is missing all the good suspension, and has had the frame replaced and needs a damper bracket welded to it.

The silver one on the right is Bayliss old one from 95' and is very true to it's original build. With only a couple of minor things different, such as a fuel tap, rather than a dry break connector, and the wrong tacho on it. Other than that, it is as he raced it (colours aside) in 95 and as i raced it in 96'.

Don't be too jealous. remember these are ten year old bikes. they don't go stop and steer like the modern stuff, so it's not as glamorous as it looks. My road bike is now faster than one of these.

As for a Wet/dry set-up, Maybe The intention was to only have one bike, but when i found my original bike just after i had bought the other one, i just had to have it.

As luck would have it i blew an engine in the first 4 laps of sat practice, and spent the rest of saturday, swapping over engines out of the spare bike. So was lucky i had it in the end.

i am unsure as to what to do with kev's old bike. I may keep it and restore it as it was when he rode it, or i may sell it. Dunno???

Mind it was handy to have as a spare. But i have a spare frame for one already so if i sold it i could use the money to buy another motor and swingarm and spare crash bits. that will no doubt be needed at some stage.

Is it rude to ask how much approximatley...ball park sorta thing....just to get an idea.

One was purchased from a forum member so i wont say about that unless they want to, but the silver one i paid $3000 for. Here is what it had.
WP rear shock,
WP Fr springs and WP valving,
WP steering damper,
ZX7R Master Cylinder,
Full Titanium Muzzy Race system,
Custom rear sets,
Custom Handlebars,
Handmade Carb Needles,
Carbon Fibre ram air pods,
Titinium engine bolt kit,
rear stand,
numerous engine spares including, crank,rods,head,valves,cams,barrells,pistons,carbs,and more.,
Scitzu Tacho,
And a few more things i can remember just now.

If you are looking for a cheap form of track bike, or even entry level racing they can be a good choice. Just be prepared for a motor rebuild occasionally.

Just had a report from the engine builder who is rebuilding the dead Zx6 motor from Two weekends ago at Broadford. It has belted shit outta number 4 cylinder and needs a few things replaced.

New head, 8 valves, Two pistons, barrells, two pistons rings, little end bearing, and associated gaskets.

Luckily, I had all these items in my spares kit, so no parts expenses immediately. However, as i am bound to do another motor at some stage, if anyone has any bits laying around their sheds, lets me know.

I am hoping to have the motor back in the bike this weekend, so i can run it in at the next P.I. track day, 22nd aug.

The motor I used for Broadford after this one blew to bits, was down on power by prob 10 or 15 hp, gauging by seat of the pants dyno So once the good engine is rebuilt, i am going to pull the old one out and have it refreshed before it goes bang too.

i remember seeing both those bikes in action....i cried when troy crashed and lost the 96 ss title to dean thomas the traitor (i've since forgiven him as he's riding the hawk kawasaki in bsb). kev killed em 96 to back up his 2 proddie titles

my mate had an f model......wicked bike. did a session on it at oran park back in 96....fark how bad does that sound....10 years ago nearly.

i remember seeing both those bikes in action....i cried when troy crashed and lost the 96 ss title to dean thomas the traitor (i've since forgiven him as he's riding the hawk kawasaki in bsb). kev killed em 96 to back up his 2 proddie titles

my mate had an f model......wicked bike. did a session on it at oran park back in 96....fark how bad does that sound....10 years ago nearly.

It was 1995' that Troy lost the ss title to Dean. And Troy didn't crash if you remember, he was taken out at honda corner by another unnamed rider

In 1996, I rode that bike in Some of the ARRC's and the vic titles. I shared pits, and engine builders, but Kev had his own crew. I was unfortunately mostly on my pat malone. He was exceptionally good at setting up a motorbike even back then. And would work all weekend usually to have it perfect come fall of the flag on race day.

He had a totally diefferent style to Troy, and the bike set-up was totally different. Spring rates and suspension valving were all totally different. Mind I don't think many people could have ridden Troy's bike the way he had it set-up. It was like almost solid in the rear and real soft in the front. the way he liked it apparently. Whereas kev set his up with more Fr-Rr balance. Kev rode it smooth, with lotsa corner speed. Troy backed it in, squared it off, and banged open the throttle

I bought a 99 zx6 recently and I've been trying to figure out what muzzy system it has on it.
From what I can tell it's a full titanium system, has the slim round can. very similar to the pics of your track bikes. I remember talking to Marranda about how it looked just like the one on her 6 ... before you bought it
The muzzy site isn't proving very helpfull. I can find similar systems but not with the titanium slim can. Does that mean I've got the race system? it's the only one without pics on the site
you seem to know your 6's so thought I'd ask.

from memory gobert used the same type of setup as troy, hard rear soft front.

Heya too. niko, if you can, let me have a look at it some time, n i can tell ya pretty much where it's at. I used to work for the Muzzy importer (Cosways) at one time, but not in 99', however i still should be able to tell ya what it is by the contstruction etc. If it is full titanium, then it is def race headers. But they made a road titanuim fuffler for em too. so will need to site that to see what it is. Just gimme a call on 0411 703 006 n we can sort a catch-up. Cheers.

What you said about Gobert, may well be true, as they both rode with fairly loose back-it-in styles

Watching Gobert win that WSBK race on the ZX7R was like the madest ride i have ever seen. He was just on it. I dont reckon he has ever ridden with as much passion and committment as that race. Mad bastard

I was sorta kinda on the off weird chance hypothetically thinking about one day maybe getting a track bike.... and something like those older 6's would be SHIT HOT!! and you say around $3Large with awesome goodies (WP, full exh., etc.) HHHHHMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm
