Hi mate; geez you're going to be very popular.

I currently have a zxr 750 with a dead engine... well, dead'ish. I can get it started now but sounds very very unhealthy; the crank is more audible than the exhaust :|
So looks like I'm in the running for a complete new engine - I was told (By Lloyd Penn mind-you) that these engines are far too expensive to rebuild?

I have an appointment at castle hill motorcycles tomorrow morning for a diagnosis. So will see how I go :)

I've been looking into the ZX9R engine conversion, seems like a fairly logical option if a new engine is on the cards. A bit of ringing around gave me the impression that a 94-96 ZX9R engine is easier to find than a 94 ZXR750 engine.

I've picked up a couple of freelance contracts to -hopefuly- cover the cost of getting the bike running, and get a bit of extra fun :D I figure if I need to do a lot of mucking around now, I might as well throw a few tweaks in for good measure.

So; lets say, ZXR 750 L2, dead engine (end bearing or piston ring I recon now), $2000 budget to fix her up.
What do you suggest?

PS- Sorry everyone for a long-winded post. Was thinking through my fingers a bit :)

Another engine gone but at least the purple and pink are still there, oh yeah.

Hi James,

Josh and i have encounted a few problems with his L model ZXR750 motor before it was turboed, and also another 4 guys have had a similar problem, mainly with the top end the camshafts hardfacing wears away then starts gouging the cam follower (happened to Josh twice).
He finally fixed this by getting the cams welded, ground, stress relieved then cryogenicly hardened (Normal hardfacing process only lasted 6 months the first time) at the cost of $400 for camwork and $150 for hardening.
The bonus of this process is that you can get a custom cam grind.
I have never heard of a crank going in one of those motors as they have a really strong bottom end, so may pay just to take off the cover to inspect the cams.

900 conversion
Mate even though it is a very very cool modification you may be surprised about the availability of the 9 motor and the money wreckers are asking for them these days, Josh is about to do the conversion to his bike and bolt all the turbo equipment to it.
Metropolitan bike wreckers quoted josh $2600.00 with 45000klms for a 9 motor and that seems to be the going rate these day as we did a lot of searching then in your case the expence of carbs, airbox etc.
Josh has finally found a company that imports motors from Japan and for the 9 motor he is asking $1500.00 landed at his door so 1 has been orderd. So if you do decide to rebuild the 750 there will be his whole 750 complete motor to get as many parts you need if you plan to rebuild the 750 when his 9 motor comes.

Mate if you would like a second opinion on the motor i can have a look at it for you.

I'll let you know what castle hill tell me and see where I can go from there.
If I do have significant engine damage, I'd even take the complete 750 off Josh's hands if he wants.

While I'm going through all this just to get my "old" bike going again, I might as well get it perfect.

not sure mate, you need to follow the link on page 2 of this thread, or better bet, send a pm to MBP and check with him directly - he knows these 750's inside out.

My guess on circlip position would be top or 2nd from top position ( ie lean ) , as all the other mods seem to suggest leaner is better with these bikes ( but check with Matt first )

Hey toppo,

Gosling1 is pretty much on the money, i use the 2nd clip from the top of the needle but there are a few variables that you should consider first.

The ZX7R standard main jets are 180 and 190 these are HUGE mainjets and if your carbs arn't tuned properly they can run with flat spots and or really rich in mid range power.

I use the standard CV carbs on the ZX7R but use a dyno jet kit, 126 main jets with the airbox modification that pressurize the float bowls that is explaned earlier in this tread, leaning these motors using the smaller main jets, dyno jet needles and the airbox mod makes a huge difference to increasing power from stock and trottle response, i was at the time using stock headers and a Kerker pipe, since then i have added a TKA titanium full system and with the carburation the way it is the power curve is very smooth.
